We are excited to announce that File Manager for Dropbox 1.3.17 is officially released. This major update brings high-performance multi-file and folder ZIP streaming downloads with ZIP64 support, native Easy Digital Downloads (EDD) integration, direct single-file streaming, smarter search with typo tolerance, a native server Info-ZIP backup engine, and full WordPress 6.7 compatibility.
Whether you manage client asset portals, sell digital downloads with WooCommerce or EDD, or back up your website directly to Dropbox, version 1.3.17 delivers faster operations, leaner server memory usage, and friction-free file management. For an in-depth setup walkthrough, explore our guide on why to integrate Dropbox with WordPress.
1. Bulk File & Folder ZIP Downloads with Real-Time Streaming
Downloading multiple files or nested folders from cloud storage traditionally strains web hosting environments. Standard archiving scripts load entire file contents into server RAM before serving a download, frequently causing PHP memory exhaustion or script timeouts on large archives.
Version 1.3.17 solves this with a redesigned bulk download pipeline built on real-time Zlib chunk streaming and the ZIP64 specification via the Dropbox API:
Multi-Select Checkboxes & Select All: Visitors can select individual files or folders using checkboxes, or click “Select All” to batch-select everything in the current folder view.
Zero Local Disk Bloat: The server compresses and flushes data chunks directly down the HTTP stream to the visitor’s browser. No temporary multi-gigabyte ZIP files are staged on your local web server disk.
ZIP64 Support: Handles archives with more than 65,535 files or archives exceeding 4 GB without archive corruption or index truncation.
Real-Time Transfer Progress Modal: A polished progress modal displays real-time progress metrics (transferred MB, percentage, file counter, and an instant cancel button).
Granular Module Permissions: Administrators can enable or disable bulk downloads per-module using the new Allow Multiple Files Download toggle in Module Builder.
Real-time Zlib chunked streaming architecture and high-performance native Info-ZIP backup pipeline in File Manager for Dropbox 1.3.17.
2. Direct Streaming Downloads & Download Method Controls (Pro)
Previously, downloading single files from Dropbox in WordPress relied solely on redirecting the visitor to a Dropbox preview or temporary download URL. While convenient, redirects can disrupt the user experience, expose external URLs, and trigger browser pop-up blockers.
In version 1.3.17, administrators can choose their preferred download delivery model under Settings > Advanced > Download Method across WooCommerce, Easy Digital Downloads, and shortcode modules. In the Free version, downloads are delivered via direct redirect to the Dropbox CDN. Upgrading to Pro unlocks full on-site streaming controls:
Automatic / Smart Auto (Pro – Default & Recommended): Intelligently balances user experience and server stability. Files up to 450 MB stream seamlessly through your WordPress domain using binary chunked streaming, while large files (>450 MB) automatically redirect to Dropbox CDN to prevent server memory exhaustion or hosting response cutoffs. Also includes an automated fallback to direct streaming if CDN links ever encounter issues.
Direct Streaming (Pro – Always Stream via PHP): Streams files directly from Dropbox through your WordPress domain using binary chunked streaming and HTTP 206 Partial Content. Downloads start instantaneously without temporary server caching, supporting pause/resume and keeping visitors on your site.
Redirect to Dropbox (Free & Pro): Seamlessly redirects the visitor to the official Dropbox download URL, offloading server bandwidth entirely to Dropbox cloud infrastructure (standard delivery method in the Free version).
Preserved Filenames & Characters: Direct streaming strictly preserves exact original filenames, character casing, special brackets, spaces, and multi-language characters in the Content-Disposition header.
3. Native Easy Digital Downloads (EDD) Integration
Selling downloadable digital assets—such as software packages, video courses, design assets, and music packs—with Easy Digital Downloads traditionally requires uploading multi-gigabyte archives to your web server, quickly consuming server storage and exceeding PHP upload limits.
Version 1.3.17 introduces seamless native integration with Easy Digital Downloads:
One-Click “Add Dropbox File” Button: An integrated selector button appears directly inside the EDD Download Files metabox on the download edit screen. Browse your Dropbox folders and attach files to your digital products in seconds.
Native Admin Styling: The selector button dynamically matches WordPress core and EDD button heights and styles across both standard and custom admin themes.
Decoupled Download Authorization: Secure token authorization ensures paying customers download files directly without requiring a front-facing module shortcode on the checkout or confirmation page.
Full WooCommerce Parity: Both WooCommerce and Easy Digital Downloads now share the same hardened cloud delivery engine, ensuring reliable file access across all e-commerce setups.
Finding files across sprawling cloud folders can be difficult when user search queries don’t match exact file names. Version 1.3.17 expands our search engine under Settings > Advanced with two powerful capabilities:
Fuzzy Separator Matching: Users frequently type queries with spaces, while filenames on Dropbox use hyphens, underscores, or camelCase. Searching for annual financial report now matches annual-financial_report.pdf effortlessly.
Search Synonyms: Define equivalent keyword clusters. When a visitor searches for any word in a cluster, the search engine returns matches for all equivalent terms.
Multi-Delimiter Support: Synonym groups can now be mapped using commas (,), semicolons (;), pipes (|), or newlines. For example, invoice, receipt, bill, payment or agreement | contract | terms are parsed cleanly.
Relevance Scoring: Exact keyword matches rank highest, followed by fuzzy and synonym matches to maintain clean, intuitive result order.
Frontend Focus Stability Fix: Resolved an issue where the search input field inadvertently lost focus while typing on frontend templates, ensuring a smooth, uninterrupted search experience.
For WordPress site owners relying on Dropbox for site backups, version 1.3.17 delivers a massive architectural overhaul to the backup and migration subsystem:
Native Server Info-ZIP Engine: When available on Linux/Unix hosting servers, the plugin uses the multi-threaded native zip binary. This compresses site files up to 5x faster than pure PHP implementations while reducing CPU overhead.
Automated Backup Retention: Prevent runaway cloud or server storage usage. Set maximum archive limits for local and Dropbox storage; older archives are automatically pruned when thresholds are reached.
Active Backup Progress Monitor: The New Backup screen features a live status card showing real-time file counters, processed megabytes, and current stage (Database Dump, Filesystem Manifest, Compression, Dropbox Upload).
Hardened Background Worker: Background tasks leverage atomic MySQL named locks and self-healing TTLs, backed by a universal admin-ajax.php fallback runner to guarantee execution even on hosts with disabled WP-Cron.
Resilient Database Restores: During site restores, conflicting foreign key constraints on temporary staging tables are stripped automatically, eliminating MySQL foreign key constraint errors.
6. Module Builder & User Interface Polish
Version 1.3.17 refines day-to-day usability across all administrative and frontend module screens:
Embed into Page/Post Action: In the Module Builder module list, click the context menu to immediately embed any module into a new or existing WordPress post or page without copying shortcodes manually.
Universal Right-Click Context Menu: The convenient right-click context menu—previously exclusive to File Browser—is now available across all File List template views.
Dynamic UI Gating: When action permissions (such as rename, delete, or download) are disabled in module settings, the 3-dots trigger button and the Actions table column hide automatically for a clean presentation.
Smooth Settings Accordion: Fixed an accordion animation glitch in plugin settings, ensuring sections expand and collapse smoothly.
Special Characters & Leading Asterisks in Folder Names: Resolved an issue where folders containing leading asterisks (e.g., *FOLDER) or question marks failed to open with a “Folder not found or access denied” error. Path normalization now cleanly preserves valid cloud path symbols across all API operations.
WordPress 6.7 Ready: Tested and optimized for the latest WordPress 6.7 release, ensuring flawless block rendering and reliable background task scheduling.
Modal & Tooltip Styling Fixes: Resolved transparent backdrop overlays and tooltip notch alignment on progress dialogs and dark themes.
How to Get Version 1.3.17
Upgrading to version 1.3.17 is seamless and fully backward-compatible with all existing shortcodes, Gutenberg blocks, and Elementor modules:
Automatic Update: In your WordPress admin dashboard, navigate to Plugins > Installed Plugins and update File Manager for Dropbox with a single click.
Direct Package Download: Download the latest release archive directly via our direct download endpoint.
Version 1.3.17 adds real-time streaming ZIP downloads for multiple files and folders with ZIP64 support, native Easy Digital Downloads (EDD) integration, Pro Smart Auto and direct single-file streaming downloads (HTTP 206), Pro fuzzy search with multi-delimiter synonyms, a native server Info-ZIP backup engine with automated retention policies, and one-click "Embed into Page/Post" actions in Module Builder.
Instead of generating and caching multi-gigabyte ZIP archives on your local web server disk, the plugin uses chunked Zlib streaming. Data chunks are compressed on the fly and sent directly through the HTTP response to the visitor's browser, preventing server disk bloat and memory spikes.
Under Settings > Advanced > Download Method, Free users deliver downloads via direct redirect to Dropbox CDN. Pro users unlock two advanced streaming options: Smart Auto (the default and recommended method that streams files up to 450 MB on-site while safely redirecting larger files to Dropbox CDN) and Direct Streaming (forcing PHP streaming through your WordPress domain with pause/resume support and preserved filenames).
In the EDD Download Files metabox, an "Add Dropbox File" selector lets you browse cloud folders and attach Dropbox files to digital products. Customer downloads are authenticated automatically with secure temporary tokens, removing the need for module shortcodes on checkout or account pages.
Fuzzy Search allows visitors to find files even when separators differ (such as spaces vs. hyphens or underscores). Search Synonyms let administrators define clusters of equivalent terms separated by commas, semicolons, pipes, or newlines (e.g. "invoice, receipt, bill") so visitors find relevant files regardless of the exact term used.
On Linux and Unix web servers, the plugin utilizes the native server Info-ZIP utility. This enables multi-threaded, low-overhead archive creation that performs up to 5x faster than traditional PHP ZipArchive compression, ensuring large sites back up reliably before PHP timeout limits.
